I hope I get a chance to see this movie, it looks great.

Speaking In Code

Speaking in Code is an intimate account of people who are completely lost in music.

Richie!

Here’s a great photo I found on Flickr, of Richie Hawtin and the current digital DJing setup he’s using.

I didn’t feel like spending $130 (or how ever much it was) to go to Future Music Festival 2009 last w/end, with Richie Hawtin being the only act on the line-up that I was interested in seeing. It seems we’ve missed out on a side-show party for him here in Sydney too, which is disappointing.

I heard Richie played well at FMF 2009, here’s what my minimal/techno DJ friend Matt Aubusson had to say about Richie’s set…

He had buuuckets of groove from start to finish. Rolling, relentless minimal techno. He started off with an errorsmith track and then went into a little bit of that clickety clackety minimal, but after about 5 mins he settled into a solid groove of proper minimal techno and never left it. He very smoothly took it up to techno for about 10 minutes in the middle, but then grooved it right out again. There were sections towards the end where he was playing kinda broken beaty stuff which was basically just bassline with a click and it sounded awesome on the system. Massively exceeded my expectations, after not being that keen on what he’s been playing recently. Given the festival setting, I was sure he was going to play that really noisey stuff they’re passing off as minimal at the moment with lots of big buildups, and pepper it with things like Spastik, Dios, Erotic City and No Control, but he never went near any of that stuff. Recognised bugger all of what he was playing – maybe half a dozen tracks. Very little ‘big techno’. He was pretty much continuously looping elements of the last track/s he had mixed before mixing a new one in. There was lots going on when he was playing the broken beat stuff – stuff that wouldn’t have been out of place on Closer, with a loop going at the same time. I think everyone there enjoyed it so much because he absolutely nailed it. And he laid off the effects too.

Berlin Calling (Film) : Showing In Sydney This Week!

UPDATE: Saw it! This film was fantastic! I loved it! It really made you feel like you were amongst Berlin’s club/party scene. I wish I could experience it again, now!. It was great seeing Berlin clubs Bar25 and Maria Club on film. The acting, editing, style, production of the film was top notch. Paul Kalkbrenner did a fantastic job as lead actor and music/sound-track producer, there’s quite a few shots/scenes of him getting busy with Ableton Live making music in the film, which was cool. It’s quite a sad/disturbing story really, but at the same time very funny as well, odd mix but it works. The sound was slamming at the Chauvel cinema, very powerful, felt like we were right there on stage with him at the club/party. A little warning, there’s lots of sex, drugs and techno! This film made me fall in love with Sascha Funke’s track ‘Mango’ all over again. I highly recommend seeing this film if you’re into Berlin/German club/techno culture! I’d love to see this again, it’s a shame it was only on for a few days in Sydney. I look forward to buying a DVD of it later this year. Now I’m off to buy the CD sound-track.

Globe-trotting DJ and electronic music composer Martin a.k.a. DJ Ickarus (real-life musician Paul Kalkbrenner), returns to the hot-house rave scene in Berlin to record his highly anticipated new album. But internal and external pressures are taking their toll. His heavy use of party drugs supplied by Crystal Pete (Peter Schneider) is adversely affecting his personality and damaging his relationship with girlfriend/manager Mathilde (Rita Lengyel). Sent to a psychiatric clinic, Ickarus’ downward spiral shows no sign of abating until he is allowed to compose within hospital walls. But is it too late? Can Ickarus overcome his demons and deliver the music?

HMC @ Mad Racket – The Interestate Mardi Gras Special – Marrickville Bowlo : 07.03.2009

UPDATE : Just a quick follow-up. HMC was excellent at this! I really enjoyed what he played in both his DJ set and live set. I actually felt inspired and excited by the music, something I’ve not felt out for ages. Damien ‘Dames’ Donato helped out with the live set, from behind a mixing desk and racks of hardware samplers, rack-mount synths, effects processors etc. Nice to see a live set with no laptop/Ableton for a change. It didn’t feel like a very well attended Mad Racket though.

Some track-spotting from HMC’s sets…

DJ HMC – 6am
LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver (Carl Craig C2 Remix Rev.3)
Depeche Mode – The Darkest Star (Holden Dub)
Tres Demented – Brain Freeze
DJ HMC – Phreakin’ [Live]
Giorgio Gigli & Donato Dozzy – Real Love EQ – Italy
DJ HMC – I Get Deeper [Live]
Sascha Dive – Deepest America (Moodymann Remix)
Recloose – Cardiology (Isolee Remix)

I wish they would digitally release their back catalogue. I’d rather give these guys $, than pay $ to strangers for second hand vinyl.
