HMC @ Mad Racket – The Interestate Mardi Gras Special – Marrickville Bowlo : 07.03.2009

UPDATE : Just a quick follow-up. HMC was excellent at this! I really enjoyed what he played in both his DJ set and live set. I actually felt inspired and excited by the music, something I’ve not felt out for ages. Damien ‘Dames’ Donato helped out with the live set, from behind a mixing desk and racks of hardware samplers, rack-mount synths, effects processors etc. Nice to see a live set with no laptop/Ableton for a change. It didn’t feel like a very well attended Mad Racket though.

Some track-spotting from HMC’s sets…

DJ HMC – 6am
LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver (Carl Craig C2 Remix Rev.3)
Depeche Mode – The Darkest Star (Holden Dub)
Tres Demented – Brain Freeze
DJ HMC – Phreakin’ [Live]
Giorgio Gigli & Donato Dozzy – Real Love EQ – Italy
DJ HMC – I Get Deeper [Live]
Sascha Dive – Deepest America (Moodymann Remix)
Recloose – Cardiology (Isolee Remix)

Adelaide (my home town) techno/house DJ/producer legend HMC [Dirty House Records, Dirty Acid Trax, Juice Records] plays Sydney this Saturday 7th March, at Mad Racket – Marrickville Bowlo, performing both live and DJ sets! I’m excited!

Time to put your mind in the gutter and you ass on the floor!

I wish they would digitally release their back catalogue. I’d rather give these guys $, than pay $ to strangers for second hand vinyl.

Gamal Kabar – The Filth [Poker Flat (White) Recordings]

Gamal Kabar - The Filth [Poker Flat (White) Recordings]

Gamal Kabar – The Filth [Poker Flat (White) Recordings]

I bought this on Beatport the other night, but it seems to have been taken off shortly after. I think I managed to buy something that wasn’t intended to be available for purchase so soon.

The title cut The Filth is a killer track. Totally my favourite track right at this moment. Off-beat hats and ticks, a kick, and a truncated open hi-hat is the simplistic, solid, rigid, beat pattern moved along by a throbbing sub-bass, all creating a hypnotic, deep groove. Melodic type interest comes from a catchy little pattern of layered, stabbing, ripping, modulated, acidic synthetics, rising and falling in pitch, with the lines going against each other, and tripping in pitch during the beatless and bassless break-down, then the beats and bass kick back in. Yum! There are also some clever minimalistic effects bubbling away at the edges, just above the noise floor. It’s all so simple, yet so effective. I would have liked to have heard the top end sizzle of a 909 ride pattern add to the intensity later in the track, but perhaps that’s too old-school/formula these days. In saying all this, it’s a good track, it’s not the best track ever, but I think it works really well. It’s almost something you would expect to hear from the M_nus label/crew. I can’t wait to hear this out on a decent system.

This is the 4th white Poker Flat Recordings release. I have to admit I’ve been a little dissapointed with the last bunch of Poker Flat Recordings releases, and have not bought that many, a track here and there. Still yet to check out the Argy album properly though. I used to buy every Poker Flat Recordings release on vinyl without fail a few years back, it was my favourite label for a while there too. I’m still a big fan of Steve Bug DJ sets though.

More data on this release…

In a way The Filth reminds me a bit of DJ HMC – 6am [Undefined], with it’s repetitive, solid, sub-bass and beats, rigid backing, with a ripping acidic 303 sound on top. One of my all time favourite acid/techno tracks. I was very lucky to grow up in Adelaide’s techno scene in the early-mid 1990’s hearing DJ HMC regularly.

Speaking of music… some other tracks I’m enjoying at the moment…

Chic Miniature – Excandalo [Crosstown Rebels]
Subb-an – Moscow Fighting [Immigrant]
Lauhaus – Downunder [Intacto]
Andrew Technique – Dream On [Circle]
James Unk – Glitch Control (Paco Osuna Remix) [Lessizmore]
Einmusik & Stimming – Magdalena [Diynamic]
Stimming – Kleine Nachmusik [Buzzin’ Fly]
Dakar – I’ve Got That Feeling [Get Physical Music]
Tiger Stripes – Survivior [Get Physical Music]
Ripperton & Alex Attias – The Last Hour (Redshape Laser Mix) [Ann Aimee]
Ellen Allien & Apparat – Rotary [BPitch Control]
Alexi Delano & Tony Rohr – Run 0 [Plus 8]
Manuel Tur – Vabanque (Stimming Remix) [Freerange]
Joris Voorn – The Deep (Jimpster Remix) [Blank]

Quite a mix up of minimal/techno/tech-house and tech/deep-house sounds there. A couple of old/older releases too. Yes, quite a few Stimming works there, I really dig his productions.

I can’t believe I’ve only just come across that Survivior track, a catchy little number! Have heard that out a lot this year. One of those tracks that always sounded familiar, but never knew.

Yes, Tad… I know the I’ve Got That Feeling track has vocals, and I usually complain about vocals in tracks, but for some reason I really like this track.

Back to the music…

Adding to the tracks I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago, here are some more new tunes I’m enjoying of late, recent Beatport purchases.

Yes, it looks like I’m gravitating to more melodic/deeper (deep-house) sounds of late, probably because I’ve been doing more listening than mixing of late. Lots of stabbing, filtered, minor chord action here.

Lars Behrenroth – Ice On The Sun (Version Remix) [Freerange Records]
Jamie Lloyd – May I (Quarion Remix [Future Classic]
After Tea – My Prerogatives [Hotfingers]
Roberto Rodriguez – Moonraker (Phonique Remix) [Laka]
Sharam Jey – Roxcity (Phonique Remix) [King Kong Records]
Andrew Technique – Dream On [Circle]
Foat & Boddy – Droidnosh [Mule Electronic]
Oliver Klein & Peter Juergens – Scoville [Kling Klong]
James Unk – Glitch Control (Paco Osuna Remix) [Lessizmore]
Joris Voorn – The Deep (Jimpster Remix) [Green]
Dub Taylor – Beauty & Beast (Nudisco Beautycase Got Lost In The Minidisco Mix) [Alpaca]

I was also very happy to finally get my hands on Kenny Larkin – Integration [Plus 8]. I’ve been after that track since the early 1990’s, heard spun numerous times by DJ HMC. It’s finally available for .wav or .mp3 purchase on the site.

I’ve bought quite a few Phonique productions over the last year. I really liked that remix of Trickski – Move Me [Sonar Kollektiv] he did too. Trickski played here in Sydney last week, but I’m not really that into their sound. We caught a bit of Phonique playing at a Pokerflat night at Watergate in Berlin last year, great sounds. He’s playing here in Sydney in July (5th) at Chinese Laundry, the same night as someone else I’m keen to see (always the way)… Luca Bacchetti who is playing at a Lost Baggage party at The Cross. Let’s hope the surprise guest playing an early morning set at Spice in the Bunker (under The Cross) the same night/morning is Phonique, may catch him there if that’s the case. I’ve still not made it down to the Bunker yet.

I’m looking forward to seeing Gaiser and Marc Houle both playing live together at the Minus 10th Year Anniversary party at Lost Baggage at The Cross this coming Saturday 31st May. We don’t get to see the cube though. This will be the 4th time I’ve seen Marc Houle live, had a nice chat to him in London at the end of our trip last year too. I’ve wanted to see Gaiser for ages, I couldn’t stop playing his Fraktion records for a long time. Then I’ll be seeing them both again the following w/end at the We Love Sounds festival at The Hordern Pavilion, Forum, Entertainment Quarter etc, along with Dubfire, Ellen Allien, Stephan Bodzin, Lindstrom, Steve Lawler, Mr.Oizo and much more.

Also coming up in Sydney… The Berlin Sessions at the Civic Hotel/Underground on June 21, with Jassanova, Quarion [Live], and Heiko Laux, with support from local Future Classic and Mad Racket crew. Should be a great night of deep music.

Looking back over previous weeks… I didn’t make it out to these below due to being sick with some cold/flu bug…

Kazu Kimura @ Break Inn – Chinese Laundry : 09.05.2008

Matthias Tanzmann & Bjorn Wilke @ The Club Club – Chinese Laundry : 10.05.2008

My DJ mixes…

I’ve had a few people recently ask if I have any of my DJ Dave McCann DJ mixes on line.

Yes… I have 49 of them on-line, you can grab them here:

Big thanks to decoded_ fans IJsbrand and his brother Quirijn (Ryan) from Holland for helping out with on-line space for these.

These are mp3s of decoded_ shows 01-49. These are the master mixes/recordings, pre voice-overs and station IDs, all music. There are full track-listings there too.

decoded_ was the name of my Internet radio show I did with Pulseradio from July 2005 until February 2007, it was focused on more minimal, tech-house sounds.

TechFunked was the name of the show between May 2000 and July 2005, mixing up tribal, funky, percussive, melodic techno sounds, harder, faster stuff.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been over a year since I’ve posted up a mix. I have been mixing and recording mixes since then, but not been happy enough with them to put any on line, I’ll get one up soon…
