Lots Of Laughs : Robin Williams : Arj Barker

Filed under: Live Comedy — decoded_ @ 4:51 pm

Robin Williams
Robin Williams

A month ago, Tuesday 16th November, Joanne and I went and saw actor and comedy legend Robin Williams, perform his ‘Weapons Of Self Destruction’ stand-up show, at the massive Sydney Entertainment Centre, where he sold out 4 nights in row, we went to his last night, our first time seeing him live.

Tickets were close to $200, not cheap, and those were the lower priced tickets! But, after it was all over we felt we got value for money. He was excellent, an extremely funny and entertaining performance. He had us laughing non stop for his whole two hour show, laughing till we had tears in our eyes and pains in our side.

Keeping the energy level high his entire show, working his way through a wide range of topics, at a blistering pace, with some nods to his past film and TV work thrown in too. Never a dull second.

I’m really glad we decided to go see him. I struggle to find the right words every time I open my mouth, he didn’t slip up once the entire show. I guess he’s had many years and 100s of performances to perfect it.

He has certainly come a long way since the ‘Mork & Mindy’ TV show. I loved that show as a kid in the late 70’s, early 80s. I really like him in his more serious film roles, like ‘One Hour Photo’, and ‘Insomnia’, I’ve watched both of these again recently, great films.

Aussie lads The Umbilical Brothers doing warm up got some good laughs too, usually not a fan, but they had me laughing.

And now for something completely different… Slowing the pace right down…

Arj Barker
Arj Barker

Arj Barker at the State Theatre, performing his ‘Let Me Do The Talking’ show, Tuesday 7th December.

I’ve seen him perform a few times now, he always brings the laughs, with his very laid back, slow-burn style comedy, with humorous observations on our use of technology, and on our on-line, social network connected lives. I love the way he pulls back the microphone and hits us with that radio announcer voice, for stats and facts.

He had some great digs at JB HiFi (how many there are, everywhere, and how you usually can’t walk out of one without buying anything), and he loves to pay out our Australian accent, I think he does it so well now, because he spends so much time. It’s interesting how he performs in the regional areas first before doing the cities each time he’s out here, gathering material I think.

Unfortunately this performance will be remembered mostly because of some idiot in the audience who heckled via a loud/long whistle a few times during the performance, Arj eventually stopped the show, demanding the guy was ejected before he would continue, which darkened things a bit, but brought a big cheer when the guy was actually ejected, and then the comedy continued. Not one of my fave, or the best Arj performances, but I had some great laughs. Think I laughed more at the older material he fell back on a few times, than the newer stuff.

A feature, and review of the same performance here:

PS:

Ant (ARB2.5), Brad (Product) and I did a regular decoded_ club night in Sydney for a while, on a Thursday night at The Burdekin here in Sydney, a few years back. It’s excellent to see the guys have got something happening in London, now that they are both living there.

Yes, decoded_ is also the name for my defunct Internet radio show, and this blog.

Great to see Dave Choe added to the line-up too, as well as being a great DJ, he’s also half of the crew behind all the excellent Glitch club nights and parties in Sydney over the years. He moved to London a year ago.

All these guys know and play great music, and are great mates. I highly recommend checking this out if you’re in London town. A chance to catch up with some really friendly Aussie crew too.

R.I.P James Freud

James Freud

Sad news yesterday. James Freud, bass player, singer, song writer with The Models and of James Freud & The Radio Stars – ‘Modern Girl’ fame in 1980, author and manager of his sons’ band ‘Attack Of The Mannequins’, has taken his own life at his home in Melbourne. The week prior, The Models were inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, James Freud was absent from the ceremony.

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/model-rocker-freud-loses-battle-with-demon-in-the-bottle-20101104-17fz1.html

http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/music/industry-in-shock-after-death-of-model-james-freud-20101104-17fux.html

He’s battled substance abuse, mostly alcohol for a long time. I’ve read both his books:

I Am The Voice Left From Drinking (2002)
I Am The Voice Left From Rehab (2007)

I’ve been a fan of The Models since the mid-late 1980s. I started with the later albums; ‘Out Of Mind, Out Of Sight’ and ‘Media’ and worked my way back through their earlier albums and EPs. I have a lot of it on vinyl, collecting most of the 12″ remixes of their singles too.

The Models – The Pleasure Of Your Company

Their 1983 album ‘The Pleasure Of Your Company’ ended up being my favourite, with songs/singles like ‘I Hear Motion’ and ‘God Bless America’. The songs and sounds on that album were a huge influence and inspiration to me, as I was getting into playing keyboards/synths, sampling, sequencing, making music and playing in bands. I loved James Freud‘s bass lines, and Andrew Duffield‘s keyboard parts/sounds. I’d love to know what synths he was using back then. I was also a big fan of that Nick Launay and Mark Opitz sound, the guys who produced, mixed and remixed a lot of The Models music. The sound is probably what inspired me to do a year diploma at the School Of Audio Engineering, fresh out of high school in 1989.

I only got to see The Models perform live once, when I was 16 years old, on a blistering hot new years day in 1987 at Thebarton Oval, the Adelaide leg of the massive Australian Made tour. I was really disappointed when The Models split up the following year.

Probably my favourite INXS performance was that day/night at the Australian Made concert too. I still get spine tingles remembering how INXS started with ‘Melting In The Sun’, which we were that day. The VHS video release of the concert starts with it:

When The Models played the Adelaide Australian Made concert, their keyboardist Roger Mason had broken an arm just prior, and played one handed, I believe a lot of his keyboard parts had to be sequenced for the set, with drummer Barton Price locked to a click track in headphones.

The video for ‘Hold On’ by The Models was filmed at the Australian Made concerts in the other states.

I actually met James Freud in 1989, shook his hand, had a chat for a couple of minutes, got him to sign a CD, after his gig at the Old Lion Hotel in Adelaide, promoting his solo ‘Step Into The Heat’ album. It was not a well attended gig, but he was in great spirits, and I found him to be a friendly guy. He was chuffed I had bought and brought the CD along to have it signed.

I even saw The Clampetts, a country and western side project for The Models founder Sean Kelly and keyboardist Roger Mason, perform live, in the tiny front room of The Exeter Hotel in Adelaide probably a year prior.

Thanks for all the great music and awesome bass lines James Freud, you’ll be missed, and never forgotten, R.I.P.

DJ Surgeon @ Index Presents… : The Forum – Sydney : 23.10.2010

Surgeon @ Index Presents... - 23.10.2010 - The Forum

Surgeon played an awesome three hour set here in Sydney on Saturday night. He blew our minds! Taking us on a fantastic journey of new and old techno, dubstep and electronica sounds and more. His set was very dynamic, with changes of intensity, twists and turns, deepness, darkness, and some unexpected blasts from the past, lots of memorable music.

I felt inspired and totally musically satisfied afterwards. I had a great jump around on the dance-floor at the front, the three hours went by in a flash, never a dull moment.

It was a really fun night, great venue, excellent sound, large techno/music passionate crowd showing vocal appreciation, lots of new/young and old/old-school friends and familiar faces about. The heavy rain we were met with leaving the venue at 2am (venue close) couldn’t dampen our spirits afterwards. I’m still on a high after this night, almost a week later. I think I’ll ride this buzz all the way to seeing Jeff Mills @ Stereosonic next month, and not spoil it with anything in-between, nothing would be good enough.

I’m really impressed with how different each of the Surgeon sets I’ve seen this year have been; Berghain in Berlin had a lot more deepness and dubstep sounds, Cable in London had more electronica/melodic (he even played some disco!) sounds, and now the Forum in Sydney with a hard/tough techno set.

My partner Joanne also saw his Brisbane and Melbourne performances as well, and mentioned the same, each performance being quite different in feel/sound. He certainly gave us a spanking (as he mentioned on his twitter) in Sydney.

Some tracks I knew and remembered him playing here in Sydney…

KiNK – Soda Caustic
KiNK – The Roots Of Techno
Frank Martiniq – Blast Corps
Egyptian Empire – That Horn Track
DJ Hell – Hot On The Heels Of Love (Dave Clarke Remix)
Kritikal Audio – Krup

Surgeon – Prowler
Jeff Mills – Step To Enchantment (Stringent)
Surgeon – The Crawling Frog Is Torn And Smiles
Whitehouse – ?
Ed Rush, Optical & Fierce – Alien Girl
AFX – PWSteal.Ldpinch.D

A couple of IDs are from some ITM crew, thanks!

I’m pretty sure there were some other Surgeon and B.M.B tracks/loops played. There was also a heap of other stuff I didn’t know, and I love that; some acid, brutal techno, dubstep, and broken-beat, dark electronica sounds.

How spoilt are we? He’s just uploaded a recording of his Sydney set, get it here:

Lots of happy Sydney techno people gushing about the night, here on ITM:

Marcel Dettmann @ Disconnected 003 – Space (Side Room) : 18.09.2010

Marcel Dettmann @ Disconnected 003 - Space (Side Room) : 18.09.2010

Had a really fun night at this party, well, once Joanne and I got over the shock of seeing again how expensive a night out here in Sydney is, compared to Berlin a few weeks before. We stayed at this till the very end, lights on, eveyone out at 5am.

Prior to the night, I was a bit concerned that Marcel Dettmann may just play hours of that cold, deep, stripped bare, building block techno that he and Ben Klock are known to play, produce and have on their labels. I like that sound, but hours of it, wouldn’t be very interesting, well, not to a crowd outside of a night at Berghain in there for the long haul. After seeing Marcel Dettmann play, I can tell he knows this too.

I was well impressed with the range of sounds and intensities he played here in Sydney. Mixing up some of that Dettmann/Klock sound with lots of memorable, melodic techno/house, and a little tech-house, and minimal, with many nods to past techno/house classics, and a large serve of some proper, percussive, hard, solid, techno compression, all kept under 127bpm (I like how techno has slowed down).

He kept my interest for his entire set, playing for more than 4 hours. I had a great jump around on the dance floor. Even with the changes of style/intensity throughout his set, it all seemed to flow well. He finished off with some interesting selections for his encore tracks, some electro, electronic-body-music, beatless melodic electronica, some Krautrock and Kraftwerk, respect. I think he was using both vinyl and CDs to play, a few slips in the mix here and there, but mostly he was solid and tight. I was left musically very satisified and inspired. Joanne noticed he was wearing a Sandwell District t-shirt too, very cool.

This party was going to be at Plantation at The Empire (old Palladium) in Kings Cross, but from what I heard management there kicked out all the recent house and techno nights/promoters, leaving the Disconnected crew with a tough time finding a new venue at the last minute. They ended up getting the side room at Space (above Shark Hotel) in the city, sharing the venue with the DefQon1 crew using the main room.

Probably no more than 100 people there for Disconnected in the side room, but enough for the small space to look/feel busy enough to create a vibe. Minimal lighting, lots of darkness, space to move, respectful dance-floor, with lots of friendly, familar music passionate people about, plus friendly staff and quick bar service, all win! The only negative was the sound system which struggled to push out any proper bottom end or volume intensity, but was adequate enough. I think every other sound system will fail me now though, when compared to experiencing Berghain’s. There was no sound bleed from the main room, and the DefQon1 kids stayed away, all good.

Some of the tracks Marcel Dettmann played that I knew/remember…

Aaron Carl(RIP) – Down
Gerd – Arkests Blaze
Justin Martin – The Sad Piano (Charles Webster Remix)
James Ruskin – Work (Steve Rachmad Remix)
Shed – My R-Class
Deuce – Cue Ed
Planetary Assault Systems – Hold It (Deuce Remix)
DJ Hyperactive – Wide Open
Lil Louis – Why’d U Fall ( I Called You)
Marcel Fengler – Sculptures
Richie Hawtin – 005
DJ Hyperactive – Music Box
Ray Kajioka – Steam
Function – Diassafected (Ben Klock Remix)
Junior Boys – Work (Marcel Dettmann Remix)
Tadeo – 4
Kraftwerk – Numbers
Kraftwerk – Computer World

Thanks for putting this on Disconnected crew, top night. So, Ben Klock next?

So we’ll be in London for just under a week, after Berlin.

It’s a shame we’re not arriving a day earlier on Saturday the 28th, lots of events on the bank holiday w/end with: Aphex Twin [Live], Leftield [Live], Alex Under, Carl Craig, Sebo K, Ben Sims, Ben Klock, Russ Gabriel [Live], Steve Bicknell, Marc Houle [Live], Hobo [Live], Troy Pierce and more…

Some of the club things on, that have caught our eye that we may get out to, if we’re not too clubbed out from Berlin…

The red ones we made it to.

Much thanks to ResidentAdvisor for these listings and links.

ResidentAdvisor’s London A-Z club list

* EDIT * 23.09.10

Hello I’m still alive…

So we left London on Sunday 5th September, and went to Barcelona (Spain) for four days, and had a lovely relaxing time, ate lots of great tapas and paella, and just hung around the La Ramblas area where we stayed. We did all the sights and tourist stuff last time we were in Barcelona, so didn’t feel too guilty doing very little this time. We were due to fly back home to Sydney from there on the Thursday 9th September.

However… We decided to extended our holiday by a few days, change our flights, and return to London, so on the Thursday (9th September) we could see Ricky Gervais perform his live show ‘Science’ at the Hammersmith Apollo, very funny, not much new material, but I’m really happy I’ve seen him live, after being a fan for so many years. Plus, train up to Manchester on the Friday, and return to London on the Saturday for these excellent gigs below, and most important, we could see and party with our London friends one more time.

10.09.10 : Sandwell District, Joey Beltram + More @ Colour Presents… – Sankeys – Manchester
11.09.10 : Surgeon, Shed [Live] + More @ We Fear Silence & Deadly Rhythm Present… Shed ‘The Traveller’ Album Launch – Cable – London

So, after leaving Cable, we went back to our friends place in West Hamstead, sorted out our baggage, I mixed it up on the decks for a couple of hours, playing morning come-down tunes. 9am Sunday morning arrived quickly, and then we were in a taxi heading to Heathrow for our flights home.

Arrived in Sydney Monday 13th September at night, stressed out, sleep deprived, after a couple of rough flights full of screaming kids and babies. It’s taken me over a week, to get my mind and body back into the AU time-zone.

What a fantastic holiday! Now the post-holiday depression kicks in…
