I still need to blog about my w/end full of dancing a couple of weekends ago. Going to 3 events, a side-show, We Love Sounds Winter Festival, and the after party. Featuring the likes of… Dubfire, Stephan Bodzin, Ellen Allien, Gaiser, Marc Houle, Lindstrom and more… More on all that soon.
I just came across and add for this in 3D World this week…

Yay! Some more Berlin minimal/techno in Sydney. I’ve bought a few Ion Ludwig releases too, would be keen to check him out.
Another month, another Lost Baggage party…
Yay, I finally got to see Gaiser play live, and… he was awesome! I’m a big fan of his minimal/techno productions, have bought many over the last couple of years. He didn’t disappoint live, a lot more intensity than I was expecting, which was great, a lot more thump, less spaced out minimalism, he rocked the dance floor. Can’t wait to hear him again on Sunday.
Check him out: http://www.myspace.com/jongaiser
This was the 4th time I’ve seen Marc Houle live over the last 11 months. He was playing at many of the European parties/festivals we were at last year. He’s good, but I’m not so into the repetitive bleepiness he does now. I much prefer his earlier, original sounds/tracks, which unfortunately he didn’t play much of. It was cool to hear ‘Techno Vocals’ and the 12″ flip ‘On It’ played live, but they are far from my fave productions of his. I was surprised and disappointed not to hear ‘Bay Of Figs’ played last, as were many other fans there, maybe he’ll play it at one of the Sunday gigs.
We made a special effort to get to the party early to support friend and fellow techno, chin stroker, local DJ Andrew Wowk, who played warm-up for the main room. He played a fantastic set, I knew/have many of the tracks he played. Nice one Wowky!
German now currently Sydney based Bjorn Wilke followed, and played on the more house/tech-house side of minimal this time. I wasn’t really paying much attention though, having fun and catching up with friends at the time.
Caught the last track of local James TT playing in the bump lounge/side room, which was an awesome track, he IDd it for me: Dub Taylor – ‘Beauty And Beast (Nudisco Remix)’ I’m a sucker for anything with strings like that. I didn’t get to hear much of my fave local DJs Dave Choe and Matt Aubusson of Minimal Fuss, who followed, as they were playing the same time as the Minus guys started up in the main room.
I did my best to not let the lack of cloak room (it’s getting cold out here), expensive $ drinks, and the typical rude and trashy crowd you find at Lost Baggage/The Cross bother me.
It’s always funny watching the less music/techno focused punters of the crowd, clearly drawn there by hype, or stumbled in from Kings Cross mass up when the internationals start, then quickly move to the more accessible sounds of other rooms, when the dark minimal/techno sounds sail over their pretty little (or big) heads, hehe. More dance floor space for us.
If you missed out seeing the Minus guys here, and are not going to the We Love Sounds event on Sunday day/night, you have yet another chance to see them. I may end up here later Sunday night…

Lindstrom

Gaiser [live]
Marc Houle [live]

Also… Dubfire & Stephan Bodzin [live] who are playing the closing sets at the We Love Sounds event on Sunday, are also doing a side-show at Arq this Friday night. I may check that out, as I’ll be out in the city, and it might be difficult to see both at We Love Sounds across two areas on Sunday night.
It’s going to be a big weekend!
Adding to the tracks I mentioned here a couple of weeks ago, here are some more new tunes I’m enjoying of late, recent Beatport purchases.
Yes, it looks like I’m gravitating to more melodic/deeper (deep-house) sounds of late, probably because I’ve been doing more listening than mixing of late. Lots of stabbing, filtered, minor chord action here.
Lars Behrenroth – Ice On The Sun (Version Remix) [Freerange Records]
Jamie Lloyd – May I (Quarion Remix [Future Classic]
After Tea – My Prerogatives [Hotfingers]
Roberto Rodriguez – Moonraker (Phonique Remix) [Laka]
Sharam Jey – Roxcity (Phonique Remix) [King Kong Records]
Andrew Technique – Dream On [Circle]
Foat & Boddy – Droidnosh [Mule Electronic]
Oliver Klein & Peter Juergens – Scoville [Kling Klong]
James Unk – Glitch Control (Paco Osuna Remix) [Lessizmore]
Joris Voorn – The Deep (Jimpster Remix) [Green]
Dub Taylor – Beauty & Beast (Nudisco Beautycase Got Lost In The Minidisco Mix) [Alpaca]
I was also very happy to finally get my hands on Kenny Larkin – Integration [Plus 8]. I’ve been after that track since the early 1990’s, heard spun numerous times by DJ HMC. It’s finally available for .wav or .mp3 purchase on the http://m-nus.com site.
I’ve bought quite a few Phonique productions over the last year. I really liked that remix of Trickski – Move Me [Sonar Kollektiv] he did too. Trickski played here in Sydney last week, but I’m not really that into their sound. We caught a bit of Phonique playing at a Pokerflat night at Watergate in Berlin last year, great sounds. He’s playing here in Sydney in July (5th) at Chinese Laundry, the same night as someone else I’m keen to see (always the way)… Luca Bacchetti who is playing at a Lost Baggage party at The Cross. Let’s hope the surprise guest playing an early morning set at Spice in the Bunker (under The Cross) the same night/morning is Phonique, may catch him there if that’s the case. I’ve still not made it down to the Bunker yet.
I’m looking forward to seeing Gaiser and Marc Houle both playing live together at the Minus 10th Year Anniversary party at Lost Baggage at The Cross this coming Saturday 31st May. We don’t get to see the cube though. This will be the 4th time I’ve seen Marc Houle live, had a nice chat to him in London at the end of our trip last year too. I’ve wanted to see Gaiser for ages, I couldn’t stop playing his Fraktion records for a long time. Then I’ll be seeing them both again the following w/end at the We Love Sounds festival at The Hordern Pavilion, Forum, Entertainment Quarter etc, along with Dubfire, Ellen Allien, Stephan Bodzin, Lindstrom, Steve Lawler, Mr.Oizo and much more.
Also coming up in Sydney… The Berlin Sessions at the Civic Hotel/Underground on June 21, with Jassanova, Quarion [Live], and Heiko Laux, with support from local Future Classic and Mad Racket crew. Should be a great night of deep music.

This was a fun night out, nice vibe, great to be out with mates, but we missed ya Joanne, Chesham, Wowky, Dr.Tad… Excellent to catch up with some good old club friends, Hi Pete, Nick and Sandi! We had a great boogie, getting down to the sounds of Alex Smoke.
I usually don’t look forward to going to this venue, as when it’s packed it can be really uncomfortable. It wasn’t too bad on this outing, lots of people, but not packed. I’ve said it before, but it really is so much better without all the cigarette smoke now. The new recent renovations are great, it looks and feels like an uber Berlin club now, with all the white, leather padding, and coloured light ceiling tiles, very cool. Sound System is fantastic, mmm Klipsch speakers. DJ booth area is much better now that it’s not a little hole in the wall. I hear they have a rotary valve DJ mixer installed now as well, not being used this night though, keen to hear it. It was probably in use the following night there for Todd Terje.
Alex Smoke performing live with an Apple MacBook, Evolution MIDI controller and Ableton Live was excellent. The 3rd time I’ve seen him live. Sounding a lot more maximal than minimal this time I thought. He’s got some great new tougher tracks/sounds since I last heard him live in Berlin last July, less glitch, more tech, much more sustained dance floor pressure. It was nice to hear some of his early tracks (my faves) still being played in his live set too, Brian’s Lung, Chica Wappa, Don’t See The Point etc. I look forward to hearing him again on Saturday at Lost Baggage, along with Matthias Tanzmann.
I also enjoyed Dave Choe and Matt Aubusson’s sounds following on from Alex Smoke. I’ve missed hearing these guys out. I hardly knew anything they played, which is always a plus.
It seems the majority of the crowd didn’t get or lost interest in the darker, deeper, minimal, and more techno-ish sounds from Alex and the Glitch lads that followed. The room started and then kept emptying out from about 1/2 way through Alex’s set. I didn’t like much of the warm up sounds played before Alex, too happy/fluffy for me, nice to hear Joris Voorn’s track Blank, out though.
A fun night, thanks crew! Meow! 🙂
The line-up for the 2008 We Love Sounds winter event/festival has just been released. Not sure if this is the full line-up, or if there’s more to come. It’s already very impressive.
